Twin Deception
By Lonnie Mounts

It's a little past noon as Sgt. Strickler, accompanied by Detective Nathan Nardone, walk into the Atlantic Queen Hotel. They have a brief discussion with D.J.'s parents before they direct them to the back, partially enclosed deck, of the hotel, where D.J. is sitting at a table, drinking coffee and staring out into the ocean.

They walk up to D.J. and offer their handshakes. "Mind if we sit down.+IB0-

+IBw-Sure.+IB0- He answers. The misery in his words and eyes is readily apparent.

+IBw-Now before we begin D.J.,+IB0- Detective Nardone says. +IBw-I just want you to understand that you have to right to have an attorney present before you answer any of our questions.+IB0-

D.J. gives him an odd look. +IBw-You don't think I killed my wife do you?"

+IBw-I'm not saying that Mr. Kane, but some of the questions I'm going to ask you might imply that.+IB0-

+IBw-It's basic procedures, D.J., I assure you.+IB0- Sgt. Strickler adds.

D.J. looks at them, then looks back at the ocean. +IBw-No. I don't need an attorney. I have nothing to hide.+IB0-

D.J. is being asked the normal questions that any investigator would ask of a murder case. Any enemies or angry friends, any mad clients or strange happenings going on around the home, etc. Then they begin to really pry into his personal life.

+IBw-D.J.,+IB0- Says Detective Nardone. +IBw-Were you aware of any affairs your wife might have had?"

D.J. gives him a glare that could shoot a commercial airline jet down from the sky, but maintains his posture. +IBw-No. She never had one nor did she ever have the need to have one.+IB0-

+IBw-I'm sorry Mr. Kane. We are just trying to find out if she was raped then murdered, or if a jealous lover may have killed her after a night of passion.+IB0-

D.J. feels his heart drop as he hears those words. +IBw-You mean she was raped? You know that already?"

+IBw-It seems that way,+IB0- Sgt. Strickler says. +IBw-They have found traces of seaman, but they are still testing it to see how old it may be.+IB0-

+IBw-Can they tell if there is more than one person's seaman?+IB0- Asks D.J.

+IBw-Yes they can.+IB0- Answers Nardone. +IBw-Why do you ask?"

D.J. takes a deep breath and looks out into the ocean once more, and starts to speak without looking at them. +IBw-I'm going to tell you everything that happened from that morning until the time I called 911 that night. But before I do I have to explain why we set the day up the way we did.+IB0-

+IBw-Do you mind if I record this?+IB0- Nardone asks while pulling out his tape recorder.

+IBw-No... I don't mind. Like I said, I have nothing to hide.+IB0-

Nardone pushes the record button and speaks into the mic. T +IBw-his is Danny J. Kane explaining the events of the night of Friday, May 14th, 1994.+IB0- He sits it down on the table in front of D.J. and waits for him to begin.

+IBw-It actually started a couple of months ago in New York City. We were together at her clients filming of their new commercial. Later on in the night, we got to talking about fantasies...+IB0-

It takes D.J. roughly twenty-five minutes to explain everything to them, even the details of the mock rape, up until the police arrived at their house. D.J., staring out into the ocean with a single tear running down his face, finishes up his story. +IBw-Now I'm here with the two of you.+IB0- He turns and looks at them with their stunned looks. They have trained for this kind of investigating, but they never had to actually do it.

Detective Nardone pulls himself together and tries to maintain his posture. +IBw-Mr. Kane, you say you had tied your wife's arms to the headboard, so am I to believe that she never had use of her hands during your... mock rape?"

+IBw-That's right.+IB0-

+IBw-Mr. Kane, would you stand up please?+IB0- Asks Nardone. D.J. does as he's asked. +IBw-Now could you please turn around and pull your shirt up for me?"

+IBw-May I ask why?+IB0- Asks D.J.

+IBw-Just please do so sir.+IB0- D.J. slowly turns around and pulls up his shirt. Sgt. Strickler and Detective Nardone see the claw like scratches on his back. +IBw-O.K. You can turn around now sir.+IB0- D.J. pulls his shirt down and turns around to have a seat at the table. +IBw-If your wife's hands were tied, how do you explain the claw marks on your back?"

+IBw-Those were from two night before. She got a little carried away.+IB0-

+IBw-Or maybe she was trying to fight you off before you tied her up or after you cut her lose.+IB0- Nardone says in an accusing tone.

+IBw-Why would I want to rape my wife? Or kill her?+IB0- Asks D.J. in a smart tone.

+IBw-Maybe you were caught up in the heat of the moment and accidentally killed her. You did say she wanted the full effect. If she wanted it at all.+IB0-

+IBw-You've got fucking balls for accusing me of this. I didn't kill her!+IB0- D.J. says while slamming his fist down on the table.

+IBw-Well it seems strange that you said your pager went off for your security system at your office, when the police don't have any record of them being notified, except when you walked into the office at approximately twenty minutes later than when you stated you were paged.+IB0-

+IBw-I told you to check out my pager. I had left it on the dresser in the bedroom.+IB0- Responds D.J.

+IBw-We did, but there's no pager to be found.+IB0-

+IBw-Well that's where I left it.+IB0- D.J. says in a rude tone. I +IBw- need a drink, can I offer you gentlemen a scotch?+IB0- He asks while rising to his feet.

+IBw-No thank you, we're on duty.+IB0- Nardone answers.

+IBw-I'll be right back.+IB0- D.J. says as he walks away.

+IBw-What the hell are you doing, Nathan?+IB0- Sgt. Strickler asks.

+IBw-What the hell am I doing? We practically have enough evidence to run him in.+IB0-

+IBw-You think he really did it?+IB0- Asks the Sgt.

+IBw-They found small skin graphs under Misty's fingernails and we know there his from his back. You said yourself he was acting suspicious last night.+IB0-

+IBw-Yeah, but that doesn't mean he did it. I want to have hard evidence before we make an accusation.+IB0- Responds Sgt. Strickler.

+IBw-We will by Monday.+IB0- Nardone adds as D.J. arrives back at their table.

+IBw-Look guys, I don't mean to be rude but I can honestly tell you I did not kill my wife.+IB0-

Nardone looks at him and gives him a smile. +IBw-I want to believe you and I will if you are willing to prove it to us.+IB0-

+IBw-What do I have to do?"

+IBw-Sometime today, go to the hospital so we can get some samples from your seaman and skin.+IB0- Nardone says.

+IBw-O.K., that's not a problem.+IB0-

+IBw-And would you be willing to take a polygraph?+IB0- Asks Nardone.

D.J. thinks for a minute before answering. +IBw-Won't that make me look like I'm guilty because of the rape fantasy?"

+IBw-Not if you are telling the truth.+IB0- Answers Nardone. +IBw-It will tell us the truth about the rape scene and also if you killed her.+IB0-

+IBw-I don't know. Can I think about it?+IB0- Asks D.J.

+IBw-Sure. Just don't take long or it will make you look guilty.+IB0- Nardone answers as he and Sgt. Strickler rise to their feet. +IBw-Here is my card if you remember anything else.+IB0- He reaches down and pushes the stop button on his tape recorder and puts it back into his pocket. As he shakes D.J.'s hand, he looks him in the eyes. +IBw-Oh, and D.J., don't leave town for a few days, until we get some more questions answered.+IB0-

+IBw-I'm not going anywhere. I have a wife to bury.+IB0-

+IBw-Oh yeah, the autopsy is done so you can go ahead and make plans for that. I am sorry by the way.+IB0- Nardone tries to say with sympathy.

As they walk away, Nardone can't help but to smile to himself as he feels he may burst with excitement of his first real case.

D.J. watches them leave and sits down to stare at the ocean once again. He quickly swallows his scotch and thinks of Misty. It is hard for him to bare the thought of her last impression of him, in her eyes, of him raping her.

Monday morning was quite hectic for D.J., as he was busy making the final arrangements for Misty's funeral. As this was going on, Detective Nardone was looking over the test results from D.J.'s visit to the hospital.

+IBw-What are you smiling at?+IB0- Asks Sgt. Strickler. Nardone hands him the report. He looks at it and after a couple of seconds, he looks back at the detective in disbelief. +IBw-I don't fucking believe it.+IB0-

+IBw-Believe it Sergeant.+IB0- Nardone says with a devilish grin. E +IBw-verything I told you about my hunches were right. The pieces of skin under Misty's fingernails are from his back. The seaman is from one person. Danny. This is an open and shut case.+IB0-

+IBw-Yeah, but there's no motive.+IB0- Says the Sergeant.

+IBw-You don't need one if you're wrapped up in a sexual role-playing game and you get carried away.+IB0- Nardone says in a snide voice.

+IBw-It doesn't make sense.+IB0- Says Sgt. Strickler. +IBw-I've known him since his parents opened the hotel when he was a little boy. I watched him grow up to become a successful businessman. I just can't see him being that careless.+IB0-

+IBw-We have enough on him for an arrest.+IB0- Says Nardone. +IBw-It's time to bring him in.+IB0-

+IBw-We have enough to bring him in for questioning.+IB0- Jaunts back the Sergeant. +IBw-This doesn't prove he actually killed her. Besides, we found one set of prints that doesn't belong to either one of them.+IB0-

+IBw-You make a point,+IB0- responds Nardone. +IBw-But the only prints found on the rope around her neck, belong to D.J. That's enough to issue an arrest warrant. What's strange is that Mrs. Kane's fingerprints were hardly found on anything in the room... Anyway, are you ready to go get him?"

+IBw-Dam it Nate,+IB0- Sgt. Strickler says in a heated tone. +IBw-The man is burying his wife tomorrow. Can't we at least wait until after the funeral?"

+IBw-You mean he's burying the wife he killed.+IB0- Nardone says in a sarcastic tone. Sgt. Strickler just stares at him with daggers in his eyes. Nardone wipes the smile off his face as he begins to speak again. +IBw-You still don't believe he did it, do you?"

+IBw-I don't know what I believe anymore. But if you won't wait until tomorrow after the funeral to bring him in, I'll go to the captain and he will back me up on this.+IB0-

Nardone stares at him for few seconds in disbelief. +IBw-O.K. I'll wait until then, but the second the funeral is over, we're taking him in to custody. I'm also going to have a patrol car no farther than fifty yards away from him until that time. Fair enough?"

+IBw-Fair enough.+IB0- Sgt. Strickler says as he walks away.

Author Lonnie Mounts resides in Lebanon PA. Born in WV, Lonnie moved to PA with his family when he was fourteen. This is when he began to experiment with writing. Lonnie started with poetry, then moved into short stories. Lonnie started writing DOCTOR'S ORDERS while in the Army, in 1992. After returning home from the service, he completed it in 1995. +IBw-I had no intention of trying to publish it because I thought no one would be interested in a high school educated author, with no college or writing credits. Writing has always been a way for me to unwind and filter all of the adversities of life. Then I had friends and family read it, along with some of my other work. They loved it and persuaded me to find a publisher. Now I have over fifty ideas for other books. The ideas just come to me and I have to write them down, then I go from there.+IB0- TWIN DECEPTION is his second title. YOU'RE IT and SECOND OPINION / Doctor's Orders 2, are forthcoming.
