![]() The Queen Bee By Ann Herrick
Once upon a time there lived three siblings --Gloria, the oldest, Geoff, the middle born, and Gwen, the youngest. One day Gloria quit school and convinced Geoff to quit also. Then they went away, looking for thrills. Gwen stayed home until she finished school. At graduation Gwen's mother said, "I wonder what has become of Geoff and Gloria." So Gwen went looking for her sister and brother. When she finally found them they told her, "We are making our way in the world." "I'm going to make my way in the world too," Gwen declared. "Oh, sure." Gloria laughed. "You think you're so smart. But you don't know the ways of the world." "Yes, Gwen, it isn't easy," said Geoff. "You have to be brave and strong to make it these days." He stood up very straight, so he would look brave and strong. Gwen shrugged. "I'll just do my best. That's all that I can do." Gloria and Geoff groaned at Gwen's simple way of thinking. But the three ventured on together. THE CHOCOLATE DAY is author Ann Herrick's fifth book for young readers, and her first picture book. Her novel, THE PERFECT GUY (Bantam Starfire) was an International Reading Association/Children's Book Council "Children's Choice" winner and an American Library Association "Recommended Book for Reluctant Readers." She is also the author of many short stories for children and young adults, as well as copy for humorous and conventional greeting cards. Ann grew up in Connecticut where she graduated from Quinnipiac College. She now lives with her husband in Eugene, Oregon, where their grown daughter also resides.
