Polly's Magic Games
By Constance H. Foster

"I’ll send Polly to a special doctor who will try to find a medicine that may help Polly not need to do all these things. Sometimes the right medicine and vitamins can help a lot," said Dr. Jay. "You will both have to learn to be very patient with this new way that things are now. OCD can’t always be fixed right off…sometimes it can even take a very long time. So, Polly, you and your mom will have to just love each other even more now, because OCD can get pretty confusing at times."

"Loving Polly even more is not a hard thing to do, Dr. Jay," smiled Polly’s mom. "I’m so proud of her!"

Polly and her Mom drove home with a new doctor’s name on a piece of paper safely tucked away in her mom’s pocketbook. As the car turned into the driveway, before it had barely come to a full stop, Polly was throwing the door wide open, jumping out and running as fast as she could to the house next door.

Annie was sitting on the old creaky swing on the porch and she stood up quickly as she saw Polly coming towards her. Both of the girls started talking at once, so fast that neither one could understand what the other was saying!

"Oh, Polly!" exclaimed Annie. "I’ve felt so badly about what I said to you yesterday! I was so mean! I’m sorry … please still be my best friend!"

"It’s okay, Annie," said Polly excitedly. "Dr. Jay explained to my mom and me that I have a disease called OCD that is making me sick and do all of these dumb things … that’s why I can’t always stop when I want to. But we can try to find the right medicine for it and, in the meantime, we can all learn to live with the "new" me … because I am still me, I’m just a little different now. And you know what, Annie?" asked Polly.

         "What?" replied Annie.

"Being different really isn’t so bad as long as you still have the people that love you!" said Polly.

"Come on," Annie said, throwing her arm around Polly’s shoulders. "Let’s get some orange Popsicles and go see how Spike and Freddy are."
