Glad to be in Amazon's Baskett

The following is quoted from Publisher's Weekly's Daily website.

"Amazon has notified publishers who print books on demand that they will have to use Amazon's POD facilities if they want to sell their books directly on Amazon.com, the Wall Street Journal reported.

"The move signals that Amazon is intent on using its position as the premier online bookseller to strengthen its presence in other phases of bookselling and manufacturing," the Journal continued. Amazon "has evolved into a fully vertical book publishing and retail operation. Most recently, Amazon acquired audiobook seller Audible Inc. Amazon also sells its own ebook reader called the Kindle."

Our customer number with Booksurge is 00001, so we were with them a long time before Amazon bought the company. But we must say the service there has improved greatly since Amazon came on board. Both quality of product, and efficiency of service are better than ever.
So for Cambridge Books and our authors, this is GOOD news..

David Berardelli lives on his horse farm in Pass Christian, Mississippi, about 14 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.

What did you want to be when you grew up? And how does that  tie in with your writing life today?
I started out as a musician, but as much as I loved music, writing always came first.  I've been writing since my early teens.  I was drafted in '69 and spent two years playing in marching bands and at military funerals.  I couldn't wait to get back home so I could write again.

What books influenced your life in your early years? And why.
I grew up reading Edgar Allen Poe, Algernon Blackwood, and Charles Dickens.  As I grew older I read Theodore Sturgeon, Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont, and Harlan Ellison.  I like stories that are different, that say something scary or unique about human nature.  Lord of the Flies gave me nightmares.  Fahrenheidt 451 also scared me.  So did A Clockwork Orange.  The Collector fascinated me.  Every book I've ever read has inspired me in some way.

What do you like to read now? And why? What is the best book you’ve read this year?

Whatever sounds interesting.  I enjoy Elmore Leonard because he's great with character and dialogue.  Christopher Moore never fails to crack me up.  I also like Robert Parker's Spenser books.  The best books I've read recently are Mitch Albom's Tuesdays With Morrie and Five People You Meet in Heaven.  Very wonderful, enlightening books.  I loved them both .

Who is your favorite character of all time and why?

Hannibal Lecter.  He's a brilliant, colorful, multi-layered personality.  Of course, he's got an unhealthy appetite and several really nasty habits, but we live in a violent, confusing world now.  Lecter's not that radical when you consider what people are doing to one another.  Anyway, nobody's perfect..

What made you choose your genre or subject matter?
I'm a big "what if?" type of person, and if the subject matter lends itself to horror, suspense, or comedy, that's where the story goes.  People and what they do with their lives constantly provide me with ideas. .

If a young person asked you for advice about the best way to start a writing career, what would you tell him or her?

Develop the thick, impenetrable hide of a crocodile and be prepared to be rejected.  Unless you're a celebrity, a former President, a convicted murderer, the child of a published novelist, or an athlete on steroids, no one is going to care about you.  It's going to be years before you see print.  The professionals will reject you year after year, even if your work is good.  To make it as difficult for them as possible, become the very best writer you can be.  Read Strunk's Elements of Style,  Sol Stein's books, and John Gardner's On Becoming a Novelist
If you take a writing course, use your gut to evaluate it as you go.  Even the best schools can hurt you without meaning to.  I studied fiction writing with two professional novelists at a highly-regarded correspondence school and my writing actually suffered.  The writing profession is the cruelest, most competitive I have ever seen.
Because of the Internet, even the tiniest publications are being deluged with thousands of submissions a month.  But no matter what the negatives are, stick with it.  As Harlan Ellison once told me, "Study the market, see what's selling nowadays, and try to do better."  A writer doesn't quit just because of constant rejection.  Eventually you'll find someone who cares about you and likes your work.  They're nearly impossible to find, but they're out there.

Five years ago, what was your goal as a writer?  And what is it now?

For the last five years, I've been looking for an agent to represent me.  Since I haven't found one and doubt that I ever will, I've decided to handle my career on my own.  I trust myself more than I can ever trust a stranger, so I consider my decision a sound one.

If you had a magic wish what would it be?
I wish people would start using their brains.  The older I get, the more evidence I see of people not realizing that they've got potential activity up there above the brain stem.  They're not reading like they used to and not thinking - possibly because everyone expects his computer to do everything for him.  I see misspelled words on television and hear adults - many with college educations - speaking at a third or fourth grade level.  In spite of the Information Age, society is gradually becoming an intellectual wasteland.

Is there anything that is important to you that an article about you should say, that has not been touched on in this questionnaire?
I would like to thank Arline Chase, Shelley Chase, and all the other nice folks at Write Words for taking the time to read THE APPRENTICE and include it in their catalog.  I would also like to thank my infinitely patient mentor, Barbara Sloan, for having enough confidence in me and my work to spend the last few years tutoring me.  And, of course, my lovely wife Linda for sticking by me all these years.

Mobipocket Expands Marketplace

Mobipocket, an Amazon Company announced this month that it would actively seek subsidiary  commercial outlets for the publisher's  works listed on their website.

What does this mean for publishers?

It means that many more on-line stores will carry their products for sale when they are distributed from the mobipocket.com site. In short the marketplace will expand greatly. When more stores carry the work, chances of customers finding the work in increased and a wider marketplace is created.  Mobipocket will collect for the subsidiary sales, keep a percentage, and distribute the rest to the publishers, who will pay the authors as they already do.

What does this mean for authors?

Author's books will be available from more online stores. Sales may increase, but how greatly the will increase remains to be seen. At least the books will be available in more places if readers seek them out
Authors who have "Google Alerts" on their books may receive many notices from the new sites. Please check to see if it's a Mobipocket affiliate, or a Fictionwise affiliate, before reporting the new dealers as pirates.

A Change in the Wind

   Harper Collins's New PaymentPolicy

From the NY Times

In a move that surprised many industry insiders, HarperCollins announced on Thursday that Robert S. Miller, the founding publisher of Hyperion, the adult books division of the Walt Disney Company, would leave his post of 17 years to lead this new, as yet unnamed entity.
The new unit is HarperCollins’s effort to address what its executives see as some of the more vexing issues of the book industry. “The idea is, ‘Let’s take all the things that we think are wrong with this business and try to change them,’ ” said Mr. Miller, 51. “It really seemed to require a start-up from scratch because it will be very experimental.”
The new group will also release electronic books and digital audio editions of all its titles, said Jane Friedman, president and chief executive of HarperCollins, a unit of the News Corporation.
At this moment of real volatility in the book business, when we are all recognizing things that are difficult to contend with, like growing advances and returns and that people are reading more online, we want to give them information in any format that they want.”
The new group is entering a difficult market for books generally. Citing economic uncertainty, the Borders Group announced last month that it was considering selling itself. Barnes & Noble also said it expected first-quarter results to be slightly down from the previous year.
Author advances and bookseller returns have long troubled the publishing industry. Best-selling authors can command advances so high that publishers often come away with slim profits, even for books that are significant successes. Publishers also sometimes offer high advances to untested authors in the hopes of creating new hits, but often those gambles do not pan out.

MARKETING TIP
OF THE  MONTH*

When to Begin Your Promotion

When you consider promotion, it’s important to know when to start promoting your book. There are many different thoughts about this question. I posed this question to several forums and these are some of the answers I got.

  • When the book is available.
  • When the final editing is complete.
  • When the contract is signed.
  • Six months before the book is scheduled for release.
  • Twelve months before the book is scheduled for release.
  • When you finish the first draft
  • When you feel the story won’t change substantially.
  • When you begin to write the book.
  • When the idea is first taking shape.
There’s a lot of variety in those answers. I can understand many of these answers, but I have a different idea about when you should begin promotional activities.
At the latest, your promotional work should start when the contract is signed. However, some publishers have a short delay before a book is released. When you sign with a quick publisher, there will be little or no time to promote your book before its release date.
An author can do many things with a blog and/or a website to begin their promotion a long time before their book is released. Getting readers involved in the creation of your book will begin to build your fan base and they will be eager to get their hands on your book when it is released.
Ideally, you should start your marketing plan before you write chapter two of your book. It can be even earlier, depending on the story. With the large publishers you have a limited window to promote your books. But, small publishers and e-publishers give you the option of having your book available for a longer time. This is something to consider when you're researching publishers.
